Hacking TiVo Companion Web Site: Errata

Everyone, even someone as perfect (and humble) as myself, makes mistakes from time to time. Sometimes those mistakes even creep into a published work. Of course I haven't made any mistakes, but it's possible that some were introduced by the many important people responsible for editing and publishing my book. :) Here is a list of known typos or mistakes, so you can correct them in your own copy with crayon, magic marker, blood, finger paint, etc. If you notice a problem in the book, please mail it to me and I'll add it here! Thanks!

Here are the various items of errata that have been reported:

Chapter 1

Inaccurate caption for Figure 1-6
During production of the book, the image used for Figure 1-6 (on page 9) was changed. The current caption reads "Figure 1-6: Progress bar, with one 15-minute tick mark." The actual image used however really had seven 15-minute tick marks.

Chapter 3

Early PDF version of Chapter 3 transposes Figures 3-9 and 3-10
Amazon.com had a promotion where people purchasing the book between September 11th 2003 and December 31st 2003 were allowed to download Chapters 2 and 3 in PDF form from their digital library. In an early version of the PDF file for Chapter 3, Figures 3-9 and 3-10 were reversed (i.e. the captions should remain what they are, but the images were accidentally switched). Newer versions of the PDF file on amazon.com's site have been corrected, and the mistake was caught before the book went to the printer.

Chapter 5

Incorrect filename in Chapter 5
On page 129 in Chapter 5 under the section Controlling IP Addresses, I make reference to a file called /etc/rc.arch . This should have read /etc/rc.d/rc.arch .

Chapter 6

Missing hyphen in cygrunsrv arguments
On page 136 in the cygrunsrv command, there is a missing hyphen.
-args should actually read --args .

Chapter 7

Misspelled names
In Chapter 7, Josha Foust is mentioned five times, but only one of those times is his name spelled right (agh!). The first mention on Page 164 is right, while the second one on 164 and the other mentions on 169, 188, and 194 are incorrect. Similarly, Mike Byrne is mentioned twice (on Pages 164 and 183); on page 183, his name was accidentally misspelled Bryne. My apologies to Josha and Mike.

Chapter 9

Forgot to give credit for gaim2tivo
In Chapter 9 when talking about gaim2tivo, I forgot to give credit to the author. gaim2tivo was written by Herman Bloggs (hermanator on tivocommunity.com). Sorry Herman.

C'mon, don't be shy, if something's wrong, tell me and I'll fix it here. In fact, I dare you. Don't worry, my editors can take it. :)
